Cognitive Science Research Program Description
The UCLA Cognitive Science Research Program (CSRP) is an interdepartmental program to further research and teaching in the field of Cognitive Science. The CSRP draws on the very wide breadth and depth of resources at UCLA - including Psychology, Computer Science, Linguistics, Neuroscience and Medicine - to create an environment that is superb for learning and doing research in how the mind works. The program sponsors seminars and workshops, acquires and administers shared equipment, coordinates course offerings among the associated departments and provides some support for students by way of fellowships and research assistantships. For questions, address, and further information see our Administration page.
Admissions Information
The Cognitive Science Research Program currently does not admit students or grant degrees on the post-baccalaureate level. Those responsibilities reside with the various departments that are associated with the CSRP.
At UCLA one may earn a Bachelor's degree in any of 110 departments and a Ph.D. or other professional degree in any of 102 department. Most students who would pursue graduate training will be within one of the following departments: Biology, Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, or Psychology.
Undergraduate Students interested in majoring in Cognitive Science should contact the UCLA Psychology Department, through which the undergraduate Cognitive Science major is awarded.
Technical Reports
The CSRP also puts out a set of [technical reports] for research done in the cognitive science area or contributing to the further understanding of Cognitive Science. These reports are done by members of the CSRP and graduate students with an interest in cognitive science.
Projects (Current and In Progress)
Undergraduate Cognitive Science Major - While the CSRP is not directly responsible for administration of the Undergraduate Cognitive Science major, many of its members are involved with the administration, supervision, and teaching of undergraduate cognitive science courses.
Cognitive Science Emphasis for Graduate Students - Even though UCLA has no formal cognitive science degree for Ph.D. students, the CSRP is working to create a list of courses which will allow Ph.D. students in various departments to graduate with a cognitive science emphasis. Classes are structured to provide students not only with an emphasis in their own department but a general sense of the interconnection with the other departments.
[Cognitive Science Classes at UCLA] - There are numerous course offered at UCLA which contribute to the understanding of cognitive science.
Seminar Series - The CSRP works to expand the scope of thinking not only amongst its membership but also to students and other faculty. CSRP holds a weekly Monday Noon seminar series during the academic year with speakers from around the campus and across the country. In addition, CSRP will be looking to have several evening colloquiums throughout the academic year. CSRP also co-sponsors seminars with other departments and research groups.
